I know exactly what I want:

An analog watch with Roman numerals, a second hand, day, date, perpetual calendar, and water resistant, for less than $50. I'd prefer a leather watch strap, but I can always replace a metal one. It'd be extra cool if I could find a self-winding or solar-powered watch, but those appear to be all out of my price range.

Unrealistic, you say. Dreamer, you say. Well, yes, if you want a watch that fits on a woman. If you're a guy, you have a vast array of choices. Why not buy a guy's watch, then? you ask. Because guys' watches are around 40 mm wide, and women's are about 25 mm or so. A 40 mm watch would look...well, you know how the classical geek of yore looked with the heavy, black, bug-eyed glasses? It's roughly the same thing for the wrist.

I have found one brand of watch that has everything I want (except the leather strap) but the price scares me: $10. On the other hand, perhaps I'll take two, they're small.

P.S. If you want a chronograph, you're pretty much stuck with a diver's watch or a guy's watch, neither of which looks ok for daily wear.

I think I've seen watches like that at Target, Timex, around $30-40, though I couldn't swear to the Roman numberals part. I am wearing a Timex that is at least ten years old, has had three or four straps (I'm hard on watch straps, I guess.) By "perpetual calendar", so you mean, has the day of the month on it, or something more complicated?

I'd say, try the $10 watch. Especially if it's someplace that you can return it easily if it breaks after a few weeks. That's why I like Target for such things.

I just saw some nice women's watches with roman numerals in the Eddie Bauer catalog; I thought they might fit the bill, but I just checked Eddie Bauer's website (Women / Accessories / Watches is the path I followed) and the watches in question are $70 - $100. Harrumph. And I don't believe they have the calendar and date. Hmph.

There's a women's watch at Coldwater Creek with roman numerals for less than $50, but it's a cuff watch and not everyone likes that sort of thing and it doesn't have the other functionality. (Jewelry & Accessories / Watches). There are other watches, but I don't think they have roman numerals.

J.Jill have some along the same lines but with straps or chains, but if you factor in shipping probably not so much. But there are J. Jill stores all over the metro, I just have never noticed if they carry the watches. (Shoes & Accessories / Jewelry / Watches).

Anyhoo, that's just the catalogs I know. I love Fossil Watches and so it might be worth a look there, though most are probably a little above $50 IIRC; I have been to a Fossil Outlet store with very reasonable prices, but that was in Las Vegas-- I don't know if there are any around here. And Timex is the other logical place to look. And those watch kiosks and stores at malls.

Probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but it's rare I get to use my vast catalog knowledge. Heh.

Timex does have the perfect watch...in a men's watch. Grrr.

Perpetual calendar means that it knows how long the month is, so that if it's June, you don't have to correct June 31st to July 1st. I have to laboriously figure out how many days there are in a month, and then do that twizzle thing with the stem which I find difficult because I have big fingers and not much manual dexterity. Which means that for about the first week of any month following a less than 31 day month, the date is off by at least a day. I want a watch with a date because I can never remember the date in the first place. Having to remember that I haven't changed it, yet, and adding an additional day -- kinda defeats the whole point of the date in the first place. Besides, I'm easily annoyed and this is annoying.

*grin* I'd already looked at most of those places all ready. Been looking for a while. I did check out the rest of them, and none of them had exactly what I want. I don't see any point in buying another watch (the one I have is working, after all) unless it's right. I'm not into watches as jewelry. I have one watch and I wear it, end of story. New watch means years of looking at that sucker on my wrist. Better be the right damn watch. I'll settle if I have to, but there's no reason to do so right now.

I do want to find a watch that suits, but the thing that puts sand in my shorts is that I would have had one weeks ago if I was a guy.
