So, my best cat, Arwen, has had a lump on her side. I took her to the vet, and the vet said it looked like the last one, was probably a sebaceous cyst, and that I could have cytology done if I wanted, but it was just as reasonable to just watch it. So, I watched it.

About 2 weeks ago, it suddenly got larger and harder. So I called and made an appointment. Due to the vet not being available, and then me not being available, we changed the appointment to this week. In the mean time, it went back to being like it was, same size and same hardness. So, today, I took her in to the vet. Since last night, it's gotten less than half the size, actually kind of hard to find. You'd think that would be good, right?

Well, no. Sebaceous cysts don't change in size and hardness like that. So, Dr. McMenomie thinks that it'll have to go. So, she's having surgery next Friday. They'll remove the lump (always assuming they can find it, eh?) and run cytology on it. They won't do the dental surgery she needs at the same time because they don't like leaving the patient under anaesthesia for very long. I'm not worried about the dental stuff. But I am worried about this damn lump.

So, that's the news from Lake Woebegone. Poor little kitten. Well, big kitten.

Is Arwen the kitty in your default icon?

Rats! Poor kitty indeed. I hope it goes well.

I think of housecats as little cats, as "big cats" are the ones in zoos (still very catlike, but my flatmates never want me to bring one home....).

Poor Arwen!

I know that Dr. Mac will take the best care of her. Let me know what I can do to help.

Actually, no. That is my previous best cat, Lilith. Who was, actually, even better in some ways than Arwen. Smarter, at any rate. It can be difficult to compare, of course. On the other hand, Arwen has it all over Lilith in that Arwen is alive and Lilith isn't. So there's that, too. I still miss Lilith. But there you go, if you insist on falling in love with things that only live a decade or two, one ends up missing them rather badly for a long time after.

Arwen is getting smarter in her old age. She figured out that I was going to take her to the vet this morning, and pulled a disappearing act. It took almost 45 minutes, and a bait-and-switch involving wet food to catch her.

I called around 5:00 this evening. She is doing fine, but has to stay overnight. They had said that they were pretty sure they would want to keep her overnight, so that's not a surprise. She comes home tomorrow, probably around noon. We'll see how she is, then.

At any rate, she allegedly made it through the surgery fine. So there's that. It will be a couple of days before we get the cytology on the lump.
