Still smiling

Have I mentioned lately that I love my cat? I do truly love my cat, Arwen.

I have noticed just recently that I can reliably distinguish between her generally grumping about the universe in general, her desire to be fed, and her distress when the step stool which lets her get up on the bed has been moved or cluttered such that she cannot do so. The weird thing is that I don't really know how I know. I suspect that if you just gave me a recording of her meows, without context, I would not be able to tell the difference. And possibly just a video of her behavior might not actually give me sufficient information, either. But some confluence of timing, behavior and tone appears to reliably communicate. I am a little bemused that I can't quite sort out how I know what I know, but less than amazed that we can, indeed, communicate.

Just at the moment, she's curled up on my lap, purring, having just a moment ago explained to me that I'd put my bathrobe on the step stool, and that she was unable to get up on the bed.

She makes me smile every day.

I wish one of my cats was that affectionate to me. They all prefer the girls.

I live in a place where I am very much not the top monkey, so I get lots of attention from the not-the-top cat. It could be that you're too much (or not enough) the top monkey in your house. OTOH, living with an affectionate cat can be a pain sometimes. I have been yelled at for being on the bed but not contorted so the cat can sit on me.

I'm better at Tigger interpreting at some times than at others. I'm a bit dense. It's better if he uses sign language such as standing by dish he wants filled or the scratchy box that needs catnip on it. It's not always clear if he wants to play or be petted.
