So, I started crocheting, again. It's been some years, but I seem to have gotten over my weird issue, and I'm currently working on a hose cozy because it's easy.

I like making afghans. They're easy, forgiving, and fun. There are a lot of interesting patterns. The problem is that those fuckers are bulky. Which means that every household has a maximum number of afghans that can reasonably fit in it. Our household is pretty well saturated, as are the households of a number of my friends. I had switched to doilies because while a doily is even less useful than yet-another-afghan, you can fit an awful lot of them in a drawer. However, I'm sufficiently rusty that I don't want to tackle a doily at the moment. They are a lot more technically challenging. So, afghan it is.

I'd like to give it to someone who has some use for it. If all you want to do is stick it in a drawer, that's actually kind of boring. But you know, as bedding for a dog kennel is a perfectly reasonable use.

Let's be clear on what I'm offering. It will be a hand-made afghan from a pattern in acrylic yarn. It will not be a work of art. It will be a lot more like a giant paint-by-number project. There is almost no creativity involved. Also, don't get all romantic about hand-made. What hand-made means is that it will take a long time, and will have visible mistakes. It is extremely unlikely to be symmetrical. Usually, my afghans are a bit wider at the bottom than the top, assuming they're worked in one piece. Acrylic yarn is wonderfully forgiving, and doesn't stain easily. If your cat throws up on it or your dog pees on it, toss it in the washing machine on hot, dry it on high, and it's probably as good as it was before. On the other hand, it's fucking plastic, and doesn't breathe all that well, so not a tactile wonderland, either. I use reasonable quality yarn, so it won't be unacceptably rough or tacky feeling, but it won't feel like silk or wool, either. It will have cat hair crocheted into it. No help for that. However, once laundered, the dander should be removed, so in all most likelihood, even if you are allergic, that will take care of that problem. It may well have strands of my hair crocheted into it, too. It's not just my cats that shed. I haven't chosen the pattern yet, and I'm terrible at colors, so if that matters to you, you need to volunteer and give me input before I buy my supplies. If you live in the Twin Cities, I'm happy to deliver it. If it needs to be mailed to you, I can do that, but you need to pay for the postage.

Please don't offer to pay me. This is for fun. I do this because I like it. My time is way more valuable to me than what you can offer. (Seriously, if you paid me $10 an hour, which is totally not enough, and paid for materials, the fucker would cost more than $200, and it is really, really not worth it.) Moreover, the quality you are going to get is not the quality one would expect from something that cost more than, you know, free.

Mean time, back to my hose cozy. Which is coming along nicely.

I would love an afghan to wrap up in on chilly days while writing or watching TV. I've actually considered buying a crocheted afghan from a thrift shop. (I have lots of fleece throws but they have less character.)

It looks like this one is spoken for but if you make another one you don't wish to keep...

I have a spare afghan I was planning to donate to a shelter this past winter, but never found a ride to deliver it. If you could pick it up, it's yours.

Well, it's a long summer. Shall I put you in queue? Do you have any preferences I should know about? I flatly refuse to work in the color orange, I hate orange with a passion.

Please do put me in the queue. I would prefer to avoid pastel pink but other than that, I'm not fussy.

No pink, no orange. I can do that. It'll be a while.

Well, given that you're offering up a free hand-crocheted afghan, if you wind up taking several years, getting tired of crochet, or deciding that you'd rather give first dibs to Carol....any of that is your prerogative and I will not complain!
