Letterkenny Progress
Feb. 27th, 2019 06:39 amI can now report that the two hockey dudes are named Reilly and Jonesey. I am unclear as to whether they have first names. I have also been sufficiently acculturated that when Reilly and Jonesey decided that the way to win back Katy was to beat up her big brother Wayne, my second response was, "Could work." I continue to be impressed that most of the people in this show are kind, that there is very little contempt, and very little embarrassment humor.

Date: 2019-02-27 06:10 pm (UTC)I'm not sure I'd exactly call them kind. When they start slinging insults at each other, it can get pretty mean. But overall, that sense of "we don't have to like each other, exactly, but we're a community" comes out in the end. And I don't know if I'd go as far as "contempt," but disgust is a pretty common reaction to some of the town characters. ("I don't know if I want to fight Ginger... I hear he fucked an ostrich.")
I've now reached the point where I can make it about halfway through an episode before I have to turn on the closed captions, so I'm acculturating too. I'm still baffled by the entire hockey thing, however. What are these teams that Reilly and Jonesy are playing on? Does every tiny town in Canada have its own hockey team? Or TWO hockey teams? They just graduated from whatever team they were on to "Senior Hockey," but neither team seems to be affiliated with a high school. And hardly anyone even shows up at the games, so maybe they are just private hockey leagues with no particular civic affiliation?

This is like an adult softball league. It is recreational, but some of the people who do it for their recreation/exercise have it as their primary entertainment/social affiliation/identity and some do not. Like fandom.

Date: 2019-02-28 02:44 pm (UTC)I think that there is a very big difference between contempt and disgust. Contempt has a component of "I am better than you" that disgust does not necessarily have. (And Ginger only allegedly fucked an ostrich. Which may have been sick.)
The insults are mean, yes, but they aren't...cruel? Like the fighting, they are a way of establishing social standing. The point isn't to injure or hurt, it's to sort out one's standing. For the most part. I mean, sometimes its just for fun, I guess? And even there, there's a lack of sadism, I think. I sincerely desire to never live in an social milieu where insult and fist fights are the way one maintains one's status, but I have to admit that the social milieu I am in has some pretty brutal ways of establishing primacy, also.
