If I flunk my math quiz tomorrow, it will be because fall has fallen, and that is that. You see, I'm one of those people who loves having a cat sit in her lap. Cats do many charming things, but that's my favorite one: a cat curled up asleep in my lap. Now, in summer, cats don't cotton too much to sleeping in someone's lap. They have fur coats and they're not crazy. In winter, there are wonderful radiators that are so much toastier than a human lap. But in the fall, a human lap is just right. Assuming you have a cat that likes laps. Which I do.

I study sitting cross-legged on my bed with my book either in my lap or in front of it. I spent most of the afternoon trying to fend my cat off. "No, Arwen, don't lie down on the book." "Arwen, don't chew on the pen." "No, don't bite the book, either." "Arwen, off the book." And so on until dinner. After dinner, though, she managed to worm her way into my lap while I was doing my math homework and not paying attention to her. I can't bear to actually kick her off my lap, so I move the book to one side, and put my notebook on the book, and work kind of sideways. Normally, this half-a-loaf sort of deal will put her off, and she'd leave. Not tonight. Tonight she str-r-r-e-e-e-tched out and fell asleep. Deeply asleep. So I'm left doing my homework at a 45 degree twist. My cat, however, is extra happy. I made more simple mistakes tonight than I have in all my prior homework assignments put together, I think. Damn cat. But she looks very sweet when she's extra happy. And cats are just the right temperature now that it's fall.

P.S. I took the Chapter 3 Quiz for Bio. I got 100% -- and she didn't ask a single question about cell respiration, which I spent hours and hours trying to understand. She got one of her questions wrong, too. She meant to say nuclear membrane and she wrote plasma membrane. I suppose I'd better email her about that. I'm glad I know some stuff about cell respiration, don't get me wrong. But I really battered my brain on the topic, I wanted a chance to show it off. See, battered brain. Lovely bruises, really. Comin' up on a lovely purple over here, sir.

It's all about the personal comfort levels. And I agree that a lap full of happy cat can be a very fine thing.

Go you on the Bio quiz!

You're killing me. Not one question about cell respiration? I seriously had to know if this many molecules of X go in how many molecules of Y come out? And every itsy bitsy step. I would like a do over with your prof.:)

Depends on the cat, I think. Kiki's of the strong opinion that when the temperature is 102 and the humidity at 98, it's too chilly, and that what's necessary is to wrap herself around a sleeping human's face to warm up. This is not always (read: ever) appreciated by the sleeping human.

H.P. Lovecraft supposedly sat in a chair all night once rather than disturb the cat sitting in his lap.

Cell respiration is when cells breathe. HTH.
