My grandmother died at 11:55 last night. The nurses called my mom when she was seeming short of breath, and my mom got there 10 minutes later, but Meemaw was already gone. So Meemaw missed her wedding anniversary by one day. I'm sure Poppy won't mind.

My cousin Becca (whose lj name is mom23cats, but I couldn't get the link to work) has a written little memory piece that is better than anything I could have written, since she actually spent a lot of time with my grandmother. It's here.

I don't see how I can make it to the funeral. The bus schedule is impossible, not to mention the stop is in Iowa City which is a half hour away from Washington, and I don't have the money to rent a car. Besides, the funeral will probably drive me nuts. I guess they must be burying Meemaw in town, otherwise mom would have mentioned it. Just so we're clear on this, Washington, Iowa is not where I want to be buried.

I think I will miss mom telling me the latest outrage her mother has committed. She was a funny old duck.

Weddings and funerals are for the guests, not the guests if honor.
Eventually, something will take you to that town, and you can go to the cemetery on your own, and say what you will. The cheesy irony, of course, is that if you could make it to the funeral, the only person there who'd be an asset rather than a debit is the one who is now missing.

Her memory for a blessing.
