Last night, I heard voices from the media room, so I went in. Pamela and Raphael each had a string, and each had a kitten on the other end of the string. The kittens were totally going to town. Absolutely frantic little beasts, and having so much fun chasing string that they would actually end up on someone's legs, or even lap, briefly. They still skittered away from being touched, but string, oh, string. Nuit was also of the opinion that if a string was not immediately interesting, her brother's tail was.

After a while of this, Pamela and Raphael left. DDB came in. We continued to play with string until DDB decided to take pictures, at which point, it was just me with the string, and DDB with the pictures. They didn't seem to mind the flash very much, and oh, oh, oh, the string. We got tired before they did.

This morning, I put down new food and water, and got out the string. They ate and played with string alternately. Then Nuit knocked over the water, and I had to clean that up. They started romping all over the room, including the table where DDB had his camera. Although the camera is quite heavy, it is also quite expensive, so I moved it out of the room.

I had talked to Dr. Mac last night. The kittens come from his office. He said that they really liked being petted. This has not been our experience so far, except when we retrieved them from the cage while they still lived at the vet's, so I decided to try an experiment. When Ninja was very close, chasing string, I grabbed him. He promptly started purring madly. He struggled just a little, then acted like he really liked this patting and rubbing thing, then I let him go and he darted away. I did the same thing with Nuit, with the same results. I have since captured them several times. If I dangle the string at them while I'm holding them, they will often bat at the string while still in my arms. So, so cute. I never hold them very long, and they always purr madly. Nuit is a little harder to catch than Ninja.

Just a couple of minutes ago, one of them was up on the end table, and managed to knock over a glass of water that had been left there. Also, Ninja likes to chew on books. I've had to discourage them.

All in all, very like kittens.

Also, they are now all over the room, even though I'm in it, and seem utterly unconcerned about me.

Kittens are quick learners. Yours already have this spilling water thing down pat.

(Yay for all the progress settling in!)

Oh dear, that was my water. Sorry about that. Rampaging kittens wore me out and I forgot it.

I am so glad that grabbing them actually works. Will have to try it soon.

Cats are weird.

Ibsen loves being petted and when we had him confined in our three-level cat cage (Kitty Jail!) would purr and be very happy when we reached in there and petted him for a nice long while.

But when he's on the loose, he's wary of us. Since being freed from cat jail, he'll sometimes return to it (we have it out with doors open) and hang out on the top level where we used to pet him while he was imprisoned and is fine with being petted there. But most of the time we don't get to pet him otherwise, I'm hoping he'll learn that we'll be nice and pet him wherever and that he doesn't have to fear us.

I think cats who are in cages may often be quite happy to get attention including lots of petting while confined, but be uncertain of such things when they're free to roam around. It's a different thing.
