I have a job interview in about an hour. It's my first one in years. Getting ready last night, I discovered that I no longer have all the necessary bits and pieces that are required. Actually, I'm interviewing with a headhunter who may have a position that fits my skills, but it comes to the same thing.

My good interview suit is 4 years and 10 pounds old, at least. I don't have mascara anymore, it finally went dry. I don't usually wear much make-up to interviews, since I wear none at work, but mascara is one that seems to be minimal while creating a good effect. I'm not carrying breath mints in my purse. My purse isn't really a purse, it's an Eagle Creek hiking bag, about as chic as a granny square vest. I've put my hair up in a bun, which looks professional as hell, but I don't have hair spray anymore, so it's frayed. I probably ought to remove all but two of my rings, one for each hand. Perhaps I will. I've brought the slacks that go with the suit coat I wore, this morning, and I'll change into them right before I leave. I couldn't imagine sitting in them all morning, they're much too tight. But for an hour or two, they'll do. I'll do. They don't look particularly awful, they just feel uncomfortable.

I'm not even sure I want the job. Or any other job. I didn't get laid off today, nor yesterday, and I might even be relatively safe from bumping rights. On the other hand, it might be nice to get back into real estate and banking. There were parts of it that were fun, and it pays fairly well. On the third hand, I'd have to do at least one more interview. I do so hate interviews.

Oh, and I daren't pick mulberries in this suit. The suit itself is between cream and very light brown, and the shell is yellow silk. A single falling berry would make an unsightly stain. There aren't any mulberries between here and there, though, so it doesn't really matter.

I'm babbling. I'm nervous. I'll go.

Good luck with finding a job that will be sufficiently well paid and fulfilling and relaxed as to be satisfying.

Is there a department store on the way where you could "try out" some mascara? Perfume, too, maybe.

Oh, mascara is easy. Any old reasonable brand name in dark brown will do. I had the last mascara for something like 10 years, you can't really blame it for finally drying up. Heck, the base and powder from Clinique that I reserve for extremely special occasions are at least 12 years old. I really don't wear makeup very often. I wear stilletto heels less than once a year (though I do love those beautiful if utterly unwearable shoes) and I wear makeup about as often.

Perfume, though, I really can't wear. It all gives me headaches. There are circumstances where I can't resist wearing amber essential oil, but there's always a price.

Good luck on all counts.

I daren't pick mulberries on my way to anything formal, no matter what I wear, because they stain my fingers. (They don't stain [livejournal.com profile] cattitude's, so I assume there's a knack I don't have.)

It may not be mechanical, it might be a difference between your skins, the way some people take henna stain more readily than others.

Large excellent luck wished.

And now I want mulberries. Wah.

Very best of luck with it.

Reading this has made me feel how lucky I am to be in a field where I can stot; it has become obvious to me in the last two interviews I did myself and in interviewing for positions in my team that people applying for bioinformatics positions appear only to go out of the way in doing the whole dress-for-an-interview thing if they're not confident of carrying it on ability alone. What kind of position are you looking for ?

Thanks to everyone for your well-wishes. The interview went extremely well. The job might even be interesting -- Title Examiner for a major title company. I might even want it.

I now return myself to my regular fretting and bitching. News as it develops on this channel.

That job thing

I was looking at journals of science fiction fans. Added you to my list because I like your writing.
