I guess she showed me
Aug. 26th, 2003 09:34 pmWhen I got home from work today, I went downstairs to sit on DDB's bed and wait for him to come and talk about dinner. Arwen was making piteous noises behind the closed door. If I leave the door open, then the air conditioning all leaks out, and it gets hot remarkably quick. I let Arwen in and looked at her balefully. "Cats," I said, in a tone of disgust and amusement.
I got back on the bed, and she jumped up after me with no fuss. I stared at her, confused. Normally, getting up on the bed is a major production, including careful examination of all possible angles of approach and a full safety checklist. "Fine, cat. Ignore me, you wretched beast." I sighed and shook my head. I started a new game of Spider on my laptop. Arwen came over and got in my lap with no fuss at all. She lolled over on one side, so I could scratch her belly just exactly the way she likes me to. "You're just trying to make me a liar in my Live Journal, aren't you?" She looked at me with innocent eyes and purred.
David came over, and sat on the bed. My skittish little Arwen cat stayed firmly planted in my lap, continuing to purr contentedly. She rolled her head back, so that she could see DDB upside. "Aw, such a cat," said David, and scritched the top of her head. Under normal circumstances, she'd be in another room by now. We decided upon dinner plans, but Arwen was still firmly ensconced. Now, I wouldn't cut off a priceless sleeve to avoid waking a kitten, but deliberately disturbing Arwen when she's making an unwonted display of affection isn't something I have the heart for, either.
Eventually, David got up off the bed, and went back to his computer. To my shock, Arwen stayed on my lap, still purring, still lolling in such a way as to indicate exactly where she wanted to be scratched. This just never happens. If someone moves in the bedroom, even if they aren't in the bed, Arwen feels obligated to go up and follow them around and determine the state of affairs. But this time, she stayed in my lap for another good ten minutes or so. When got off my lap, I called to David, and we got ready to leave for dinner.
Arwen gave me a look over her shoulder that said, plain as words, "Guess that'll teach you."
