So, I fell in love with this variagated yarn (now called an ombre, no idea why) by Caron. When I realized that it was in Pamela's colors, it ended up being Pamela's afghan. This picture doesn't quite do the yarn justice, it's a little brighter than this. I may try to get a better picture, as well, since this doesn't quite show the shape. It's done in hexagonal pinwheels that get sewn together. It was a lot of fun to make, and Pamela likes it, so that's all good. Possibly this pattern looks better in a solid rather than an ombre, but boy was that yarn fun.

Yes, it's much brighter and warmer than that. And I think it's gorgeous. And now that it's cool, I shall take it upstairs before the cats make a permanent nest in it.

I love the little flowers at the center of each hex. And the hexes themselves amuse me. I keep on thinking of the reams and reams of hex paper that my ex-husband had, how hard it was to find, how valuable and important it was to him. And how, these days, you can just print it on your computer if you need to.

That's gorgeous, both the pattern and colors! Must be even better in person.

'Ombre' means shadow or shade (as in darkness) in French. I can't find any indication that it's used in French to mean shades of colors the way we use 'shade' in English, but that's clearly how 'ombre' has come to be used in English.

They've been ombres forever, or at least since I was a kid. My mom loved them.

I wonder if there's a regional difference, since I think we're not that far apart in age. Ten years, maybe? My mother always called it variegated (hah, spelled it correctly, for once). She didn't do a lot of crocheting when I was a kid. Mostly, she sewed, because away back then it was an economical way to accomplish clothes. These days, it's cheaper to go to Target. We would have been living in Pittsburgh at the time. Oh, and my mother was from Boston. I remember the first time I saw ombre mentioned, I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about.

The spelling certainly suggested that it was French, but I was too lazy to actually look it up. Thank you for the information. That's neat to know.

It really is very pretty. I was so pleased with it that I actually made almost twice as much as you were supposed to. Instead of sixty odd hexes, I think I ended up with more than 100. But I wanted it to be of a size, so I just kept on adding hexes 'til I got there.

lovely design
The spirals really threw me. Usually I can visually deconstruct into repeating components at a glance. This took looking at.
